What is the course about?
This course examines the history of the City of London, by looking at its architecture and famous citizens.

Transport
First World War
Second World War
Financial City
Holborn Viaduct area
Fleet Street area
East of the City
Smithfield.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Outline the history of the City of London from the time of the Great Fire to today's financial capital
- Identify the major monuments, landmarks and important buildings visited in the City, and be able to describe their functions
- Become sufficiently familiar with the City to be able to take your friends and relations on a tour.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Suitable for anyone who is interested in London history. The second term is a continuation of the first, but new students are welcome.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Guided walks .

Clothing and footware suitable for a moderately paced 2 hour walk in London.

Paul Sinclair has always had an interest in history and has been a London guide since 2014. He qualified at Westminster University and the course focused on Clerkenwell and Islington. Since then however, he has led tours all over London. At City Lit he leads walks in the City of London from September until April and in the ‘villages’ in the spring and summer. A student commented to him this week that he always seem so enthusiastic even though he may have done a walk a number times. He thinks that’s because it is probably the best job in the world, he's out and about, he meets so many interesting people at City Lit both staff and students, people seem to enjoy what he does and he gets a chance to share the history of this great city. Every area has so many surprises and it is music to his ears when students say to me “I know this part of London so well but I never knew that”.
