This course explores the acting techniques and psychological elements that a new generation of American screen actors brought to cinema in the 1940s and 1950s, known as The Method.

Description

What is the course about?

What is Method Acting? Where do its roots lie? The course will examine the practioners and how their teaching methods were employed by a group of actors under their tutelage who exploded on to the cinema screen with a new style of performance.

What will we cover?

Looking at the careers of Montgomery Clift, Shelley Winters, Marlon Brando, Julie Harris, James Dean and Carroll Baker, we will consider how their use of the Method shaped the legacy of film performance to this day.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Have a better understanding of the background and components to Method acting and the practical techniques employed by the six actors.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This one day course is designed for all levels; to view, discuss and enjoy film acting technique.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Screenings of extracts from the actors’ films, along with discussing film analysis in small and large groups.The tutor will provide handouts for further study and research.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Pen and paper for notetaking.
