What is the course about?

In this discussion-based course we will use a variety of sources from the period to explore the trial in depth and to consider what it can tell us about Athens at this period.

What will we cover?

Combining history and discussion, we will aim to answer some questions such as: What was the background to the trial? What were the arguments made by the prosecution and defence? Why did the jurors convict? And were they justified in doing so?

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • demonstrate an understanding of the historical context for the trial of Socrates;
  • demonstrate an understanding of the main arguments put forward by Socrates and his prosecutors;
  • have some experience of analysing primary sources in translation

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is open to anyone interested in debating and finding out more about the trial. No knowledge of Ancient Greek required.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Students will analyse the material and debate the issues for themselves. To this end, some preparation between classes will be required (1-2 hrs per week)

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring writing material. The resources will be provided by the tutor on Google Classroom.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Any other courses on ancient civilisations or ancient languages.
