What is the course about?

Introducing and exploring some key concepts from the Tibetan relaxation and yoga tradition of Kum Nye. The Tibetan yoga tradition is a system to promote healing and energy, opening awareness to a point where meditation is spontaneous and effortless. This will be a practical course exploring some of the key exercises and themes.

What will we cover?

We will explore some primary concepts from the Kum Nye Tibetan Yoga Tradition, including massage, movement exercises, breathing exercises, visualisations, and meditation.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Define the terms Kum and Nye
- Experience the effects of thorough relaxation
- Appreciate the importance of relaxation in relation to awareness
- Practice breathing exercises
- Perform a basic self massage safely and independently
- Discuss the integration of mind with the body and contrast this with our usual experience of ourselves
- Experience a chanting practice to invigorate and awaken inner energies
- Practise some basic Kum Nye exercises promoting a release and/or balancing of energy
- Share experiences and ideas.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable to anyone in basic good health. No experience required. You will need to be able to read and write short sentences, follow verbal instructions, observe and copy physical movements and use spatial awareness within a group.

To assist us in providing a safe and healthy environment for you to exercise in please take a moment to consider the list below. If you have suffered from any of the conditions listed, please check with a medical practitioner whether it is suitable for you to undertake an exercise programme and bring a referral letter from your doctor to your tutor. If you have not checked, or if it is not suitable, please do not participate in an exercise or movement class.

- Do you ever have pains in your chest?
- Have you had any operations or injuries in the last year?
- Do you often feel faint or have spells of dizziness?
- Are you receiving medication for any condition?
- Do you have high blood pressure?
- Is there anything else we should know about your health?
- Do you have a bone or joint problem, such as Arthritis, Osteoporosis, back or knee problems?

It is inadvisable for students suffering from certain medical conditions to attend a Yoga class. This does not mean that they should not do Yoga, but they may need individual attention or a special programme of asanas (postures). These conditions include:

Hypertension (high blood pressure)
Conditions associated with Heart Disease, Cancer or benign tumours
Epilepsy including Petit Mal
Diabetes
Meniere's Disease
Detached Retina
AIDS
MS (Multiple Sclerosis)
ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis)
Recent post-operative conditions
New students who are pregnant.

Advice can be sought from the Department Office for those who have concerns about the suitability of the class for them.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Exercises will be demonstrated by the tutor, then practiced as a group. There is no set work outside the class but if desired the tutor will advise regarding home practice.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You may wish to bring a notepad. Clothes suitable for movement are recommended (not jeans!). A short reading list is available on request. Handouts will be provided. Bring a willingness to slow down and an open mind….

Fascinating to learn the principles of Tibetan Yoga, it’s a bit like energy medicine combined with moves similar to Tai Chi. Good explanation of moves and sequences.

Bram Williams Tutor Website

Bram Williams has been a yoga teacher at the City Lit for 10+ years. He holds a British Wheel of Yoga Teaching Diploma. His own daily yoga practice has evolved over the years into a subtle, meditative approach to asana (yoga posture) with a large emphasis on pranayama (breath control) as a lead into seated meditation. Studying in mindfulness, and both Shamatha and Vipassana meditation in Northern India means he is very fortunate to have contact with his teacher there, as well as studying with teachers from the Himalayan Institute in America. Having trained in many styles and forms of yoga over more than 18 years, Bram’s teaching approach is flexible and adaptable to the needs of a particular group (or individual). he emphasis of his teaching vocabulary stresses breath release, so awareness is directed to the 'sensation' of the posture, rather than on a body aesthetic or idealised end result. A Senior Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance Professionals, a Yoga Elder with the Independent Yoga Network as well as Diploma Course Tutor with the British Wheel of Yoga, Bram is also a qualified Lip Reading Tutor.
