London's stations see over 1 billion journeys annually, but the buildings themselves are often ignored. Explore a different station and environs each week, discovering the architecture, history, stories and future of these lifelines of London. The course starts with an initial zoom lecture, followed by a series of walking tours.

What is the course about?

Explore the history of London through its transport infrastructure. We will be visiting Paddington Station, Waterloo and Charing Cross, Marylebone and Baker Street, Kings Cross, Liverpool Street, Victoria, Gloucester Road and Barons Court, Blackfriars and St Pancras.

This course will be delivered online and in person, and will involve tutor presentation and class discussion. Student preparation and homework outside class times is strongly encouraged. To fully participate in this online class you will need:
- An email address
- A reliable internet connection
- A computer/laptop/tablet with a fully updated browser (preferably google chrome). Your device will need a microphone, and preferably a camera.

What will we cover?

The social history of the London Railway stations, some of the personalities involved with the locations and their cultural associations.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

1) Explain the role and impact of London's stations
2) Identify key architectural elements and buildings.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Aimed at anyone interested in the history of London, the development of the capital's transport infrastructure and architecture.Be able to participate in a 2 hour moderately paced walk.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

First session via zoom and then by walking tours.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No other costs - comprehensive materials will be provided.
Shoes and clothing appropriate to walking in London.
