What will we cover?

You will develop the technical and visual skills required to photograph people, portraits and a variety of landscapes. You will gain an understanding of the different uses of travel photography in the professional and domestic spheres, and explore some of the issues involved in photographing people, places and different cultures.
You will get to experiment with the essential photographic equipment used by travel photography professionals, and engage in practical exercises on nearby London locations. We will also look at how to promote your photos successfully, and some of your legal rights in terms of copyright and ownership.

What will I achieve?

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You are expected to be able to use the basic manual functions of a camera (e.g. shutter speed, exposure, focus and aperture).
Basic written English skills and an interest in photography are essential. Knowledge of basic photographic technique is useful but not essential.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and be prepared to take part in group discussion. You should be happy using numbers and able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught using a range of techniques including workshops, short lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, tutorials, group and individual assistance and hand-outs. There will regular feedback on your work. Please note any computer work will be done on Apple Mac computers.

City Lit has a range of digital SLR cameras, tripods and lenses which you are welcome to use during the hours of the class. It would be useful to bring a memory stick or portable hard drive – please note we work on Apple Macs, and while PC-formatted hard drives can be read by Apple Mac computers, they cannot be written to.
