What is the course about?
The course is designed for those who have no previous experience of working with metal. We will begin with an introduction to basic techniques. You will then be able to use some or all of the techniques to make a simple pendant.
What will we cover?
An introduction to cutting, drilling, annealing (softening metal with heat), texturing and forming metal.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Cut and form metal
- Anneal metal
- Texture metal with hammers, punches and rolling mills
- Drill metal
- Make a pendant using various techniques
- Have an understanding of basic jewellery-making, including the health and safety issues.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is for beginners and improvers who prefer to take a shorter course, or for those who want an introduction to this subject area.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Through demonstration, advice and guidance, samples and technical notes.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
General tools and equipment will be supplied. An amount of copper will also be provided. You may choose to work in silver on the second day which you will need to buy. Advice of what and where to buy the silver will be given by your tutor.
You are advised that sensible footwear must be worn in studio 308. For health and safety reasons, no sandals, open shoes & small pumps can be worn – even in hot weather.

Noon Mitchelhill has been designing, making and teaching jewellery for over 20 years. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art London she has exhibited widely in the UK, Europe, Japan and the USA. Her work has been featured in a wide range of publications and major exhibitions. Noon’s range includes silver and gold jewellery for both women and men, from the highly dramatic to fine delicate pieces. She has developed her own distinctive techniques forming pieces from hand textured, fine silver sheet or coiling single lengths of fine silver wire to create unique jewellery. She introduces colour with the use of gold and oxidised silver detail.
