Try it out: jewellery making

What is the course about?

The course is designed for those who have no previous experience of working with metal, or the tools and skills necessary for making jewellery. We'll begin with an introduction to the safe use of tools and equipment, followed by the making of a textured silver ring band. The ring-making will serve as a practical introduction to measuring, sawing, heating metal, soldering, basic forming, finishing and polishing.

What previous students loved about the course:

"Several techniques learned. Excellent teacher. Really full day - very much enjoyed. Thank you!"
"It was very enjoyable overall and particularly so because we made two pieces in the time available - can't imagine how it could be improved. Would happily recommend. I had no previous experience and this was a great introduction."

What will we cover?

This short course will include measuring, marking out guidelines on metal, heating, texturing, soldering, filing, sanding and polishing. We will also cover safe working practice.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- measure for a ring
- cut and anneal metal
- texture metal using hammers and punches
- file, sand and polish metal
- form metal for a simple ring band implementing various techniques
- demonstrate an understanding of basic jewellery-making, including the health and safety issues.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for complete beginners in jewellery-making, as well as those with some experience who might prefer to take a shorter course, or for those who specifically want an introduction to this subject area.

You must be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety
information, and be prepared to take part in group discussions. You should be happy using numbers and able to
do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through practical demonstrations both to the group and to individuals. Group discussions and feedback are encouraged.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

General tools and equipment will be supplied. A reasonable amount of base metal (copper, some brass and gilding
metal) sheet and wire are available for your use. Enough silver to make one ring will be included in the course fee. You will need to supply your own sketchbooks/notebook.
