Experience learning in the photography department. Shoot some digital images, download your pictures onto a computer, make simple edits using an image editing program (Photoshop) and create a high quality print to take away with you.


What is the course about?

A short taster in the learning environment of photography department courses. You will be taken through the process of taking photographs on your, or a City Lit, digital camera using a tripod and the procedure for downloading the images to a computer. You will then open your images in software and perform simple digital edits. Finally you will be shown how to create photographic quality prints. Please note there will be limited time to go through the settings on your camera. Our beginners' photography course is designed to teach you the camera functionality in detail.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Use a tripod
- Download images onto a computer
- Import images into Photoshop
- Perform simple edits to a digital image
- Save images as jpeg files
- Print a photographic quality image.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is for beginners to photography and digital image manipulation. The course is ideal for people returning to learning.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by tutor demonstrations, small group work, handouts, projected images of software interface, hands on computer work and individual support.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring a digital camera if you have one - you are welcome to borrow a City Lit camera during the hours of the course. You may also wish to bring a memory stick to take your images away with you.

Michael Harding Tutor Website

Michael Harding was born in Canada, where he studied cinema and photography at Concordia University, Montréal, before moving to the UK. Since then, he has created striking images of architecture, art, people and landscapes for international blue-chip clients for their use in editorial, advertising and corporate applications. Michael’s work has won many industry awards, notably being selected in the Eleventh Association of Photographers Awards and further receiving a Merit Award in the Seventeenth Association of Photographers Awards. His work was selected for a Highly Commended Award in the Deutsche Bauzeitung “Visions in Architecture” European Architectural Photography prize. His work has been exhibited in both the United Kingdom and Canada. Michael has been Chairman, as well as President, of the Association of Photographers (AOP). The AOP is Europe’s most established organisation for professional photographers, working to ensure greater recognition for all professional photographers, as well as working to positively influence legislators in the UK and Europe for the benefit of all photographers.
