Video is everywhere. But what are the differences between the different platforms and how do you tell what kind of video works for you and your target audience and what doesn’t?


What is the course about?

This is a short introduction to, and overview of, the kind of videos posted on a variety of social media platforms. Different audiences require different approaches, different formats and different platforms. The success of social media and video is the effectiveness with which it reaches and develops its target audience. On this short course you will develop skills in identifying the best platforms to use for video presentations and, recognising the relative merits of different formats and visual presentations.

What will we cover?

- Gain an overview of the most popular social media sites for posting video
- Understand some of the differences between them
- Making an informed choice for posting your own video.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- identify some of the most popular social media that host video postings
- understand the main differences between them
- identify your main goals in wanting to post video and understand where best to do so.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course, no previous experience required.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught using a range of techniques including workshops, short lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, tutorials, group and individual assistance and hand-outs. Please note the City Lit uses Apple Mac computers in Digital arts, Film, Animation, Graphics, Illustration, Photography and Web design.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You don’t need to bring anything, but if you have posted videos on social media this is an excellent opportunity to share it with a supportive group and discover ways you can improve your social media impact.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Lily Markiewicz Tutor Website

Lily is a freelance film editor and consultant. Her main work over the past 10 years has been in helping people turn their dreams and visions into interesting films and successful artworks. She specialises in film editing, but also consults on all other aspects of film making and fine art. “To me, helping people find the stories the really want to tell and turn them into enjoyable and interesting films is uniquely rewarding and deeply fulfilling. I am particularly interested in enabling people’s own capacity, teaching them both practical skills (e.g. use of software and technical aspects of filmmaking) alongside conceptual underpinnings and critical engagement (version of visual literacy).” She has been teaching film and video related subjects ever since her own postgraduate student days. She is also an award-winning and internationally exhibited/collected artist.
