What is the course about?
The course will improve your vocal skills and help you to use your voice more effectively.
Through a variety of vocal and physical exercises you will develop your ability to communicate more successfully, use your voice with assurance and to command vocal respect. You will be guided and supported to sound more confident; to speak expressively and vocally assert yourself whilst respecting others.
What will we cover?
Building vocal confidence
Improving posture and physical alignment
Breathing properly to support and control your voice effectively
Developing the resonance in your voice
Considering the placement of your voice
Improving your vocal range
Developing your presence and communication skills.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Describe how to use your voice as an effective expression of yourself
Demonstrate confidence in your ability to communicate through your voice
Identify exercises and techniques you can apply in order to maintain and improve your vocal quality
Explain how to maintain vocal confidence when faced with new and/or challenging situations
Use your voice more assertively.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You should be able to follow simple verbal instructions and be prepared to work physically and vocally.
Exercises will be demonstrated and work supported by resources.
You should be prepared to speak in front of the group.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught through a series of physical and vocal practical exercises. You should be prepared to work practically as an individual, in pairs, small group and whole group work.
You will be given exercises to complete outside the class.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You may find it useful to bring a notebook and pen to the session.

Lloyd Wylde is a former actor and now Voice Coach trained at LAMDA and at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama. She has worked for the Education Department at the National Theatre, Historic Palaces, Wellcome Trust and Soho Theatre, at several drama schools, and for the Royal Shakespeare Company, as well as independent work. At City Lit she has taught Actor's Voice: beginners and improvers, Communicate with confidence through voice and body language, Self-presentation skills for business people (with Nikki Kelly), Use your voice assertively, and on the Foundation Drama and Acting Diploma courses. Having worked at City Lit since 2015, Lloyd enjoys the diverse range of students that come to City Lit keen to learn. She aims to help all students achieve their potential, find and harness the power of their voice, all within a safe and fun environment. Voice is in the body and is an expression of your personality and presence. Lloyd aims to help you find out what your strength is and help yourself counter the things that might get in the way.
