What is the course about?

Learn about user interface design. In order to answer the question “how usable is our/my website?” To answer this question you will need to employ different methods. These methods will help you assess the level of usability of your website. Usability means that the people who use the product can do so quickly and easily. The course will examine existing usability methods. You will learn how to analyse an interface using expert evaluation forms as well as setting up a user testing session. The course is mixture of theory and hands-on. Over the course, you will learn to use the different methods through theory, discussion, individual and group exercises.

• Fundamentals of user interface design
• Usability - Requirements, Motivations and Measures
• Inspection-Based usability evaluation (heuristic evaluation)
• Collecting user data
• Establishing requirements and building personas
• Visual design principles for usable interfaces
• Prototyping
• User-based usability evaluation (user testing).

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Recognise the foundation of user experience
• Evaluate an existing design
• Execute evaluation of a design through experts steps (heuristic evaluation)
• Built personas for a site
• Setup a user testing session with expected user of the site or through the use of personas
• Analyse the collected data into actions as part of the user-centred design cycle.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is aimed at students who wish to learn more about the decisions making cycle of interface and interaction design of websites.

You should have knowledge of basic computer skills (using a PC or Mac OS and a word-editing programme). You should also be able to follow spoken and written instructions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstration and hands on exercises which will help you grasp the concepts.
