Vectorworks: intermediate

What is the course about?

This intermediate course is designed for students who may have finished the Vectorworks For Beginners course or, if you have not completed the course, have a good grounding in the basics of Vectorworks but would like to explore more advanced options. The early sessions will be designed to ensure everyone has a good grasp of the essential tools and functions before launching into the more advanced options within the programme where you will be creating professional looking 3D plans to impress clients.

What will we cover?

- Reviewing the essential 2D functions in the program
- Importing jpeg, pdf and dwg files into your drawing (including image effects)
- Creating image props (using masks etc)
- Creating viewports, sectional viewports, camera settings (perspectives) and interior lighting options
- Creating sheet layers and looking at viewport options regarding scale, depth of field, class and layer visibility
- Adding textures to wall components and creating curtain walls
- Changing the working plane
- Multiple view planes
- Advanced 3D extrude options (tapered extrude, extrude along path, sweep)
- Printing options from Layers and Sheet Layers.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Use the 2D Drawing tools with confidence
- Import external reference files and scaling
- Create image props
- Edit and /or create new hatches, gradients
- Edit textures to add bump, reflectivity and transparency
- Create viewports on sheet layers and understand advanced editing options
- Create curtain walls
- Introduce interior lighting
- Adjust the working plane for more effective 3D drawing
- Create tapered extrudes, extrude along path and 3D sweeps.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is for Vectorworks users who have a good understanding of how to do basic 2D drafting to scale, simple 3D modelling and the use of viewports on sheet layers. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught using a range of techniques including workshops, short lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, tutorials, group and individual assistance and hand-outs. Please note the City Lit uses Apple Mac computers in the Design studio.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You need to purchase a USB memory stick of at least 2GB to back up and store your data. Other basic materials will be provided.
You can get a free Vector works licence for use on the course but please note:
Educational licences are only meant to be used whilst on a course during the academic year and cannot be extended beyond the academic year. They are not to be used for business practices or personal use not connected to the course.
