What is the course about?
This course will introduce you to the most ancient texts liturgical and ritual texts, not just in India, but the world. The course will pertain to the four Vedas their ancillary texts and how they relate to the Vedic sacrifice.
What will we cover?
The main focus will be on the history structure and contents of the Rig Veda, the Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and Atharva Veda. Through them we will understand the religious practices of ancient Indians, their cosmogonic, existential and soteriological views. We will then look at how these practices changed in the last 5,000 years and the function of the Vedas today.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Confidently discuss the Veda, their contents and their importance.
- Have a working understanding of how Hinduism developed.
- Learn how to chant a mantra from the Veda, and how to write a part of it it in in Devanagari/Hindi.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is a beginners course. No particular skill is required. The course will be taught in English.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
There will be a presentation,handouts and the opportunity for discusson and questions.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
There is no other cost.
