Our short and long courses are available online daytime, evening and weekend. With courses such as ‘Understanding contemporary art: ideas and origins’, ‘Contemporary British Filmmakers: new visions, emerging voices’ and ‘Understanding the modern world’, our programme puts the ‘human’ in the humanities, inviting you to join a community of learners exploring culture in our times.

    'New' British nature writing is topping the bestseller lists, but what is it and how can you benefit from it? Join us, read with us and learn more about 'new' British nature writing and how we can think about our relationships with nature.



    The course tutor, Cathy Elliott, is full-time lecturer at UCL. She is interested in ideas about time, temporality, and story-telling in politics and international relations. Her first book, Democracy as Foreign Policy: Temporal Othering in International Relations, came out in 2017; she has also published articles and books about the various stories we tell about democracy. She is recapitulating some of those themes, and finding new ones, in her current book project on the British “new nature writing.” She is interested in the politics of pedagogy and also writes about teaching and learning.

  3. Animals in 20th and 21st century fiction

    Why do authors write about animals? What effect does it have on us as readers when we encounter animals in novels and short stories? From Beatrix Potter to the contemporary novel, this course explores the role of the animal in modern literature. Themes that we will think about together include: animal suffering, animals in depictions of childhood, and animal transformations and dehumanisation.

  4. Introduction to Graphic Novels

    In 2018, Nick Drnaso’s graphic novel Sabrina was long listed for the Man Booker Prize leading to renewed discussion about the graphic novel and its relationship to the novel form. In this course, we will discuss how graphic novels, or ‘narratives of sequential art’, have developed into a literary and cultural form over the latter half of the twentieth century and into the current day.
