Our short and long courses are available online daytime, evening and weekend. With courses such as ‘Understanding contemporary art: ideas and origins’, ‘Contemporary British Filmmakers: new visions, emerging voices’ and ‘Understanding the modern world’, our programme puts the ‘human’ in the humanities, inviting you to join a community of learners exploring culture in our times.

Our students can also benefit from our partnerships with organisations such as the BFI, the British Museum and many of London’s art galleries.

    Animals leap, crawl, hop, and gallop across the pages of modern fiction and poetry. Why do authors write about animals? What effect does it have on us as readers when we encounter animals in novels and short stories? From Beatrix Potter and Black Beauty to the contemporary novel, this course explores the role of the animal in modern literature. Themes that we will think about together include: animal suffering, animals in depictions of childhood, and animal transformations and dehumanisation.
