Description

What is the course about?

The course aims to provide students with a greater understanding and appreciation of Wagner’s Ring – both the ideas that lie behind the work and the ideas contained within.

- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

The course will focus on each part of the Ring cycle, placing them in their appropriate context, historically and musically, and analysing them in terms of their philosophical and musical content.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- a greater understanding of the Ring’s context – both in terms of Wagner’s life and in a wider historical sense
- an understanding of the ideas – both philosophical and musical – contained within the Ring
- an understanding of the formal, harmonic and melodic characteristics of each part of the Ring.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge of music is required but you should have an interest in music and be keen to find out more. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions and engage in class discussions in English.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This is an online course:
Sessions will be held via video-conference (google meets) and comprise combinations of lecture, discussion, quizzes, guided listening, video and score study. Course materials (handouts, scores, links to online videos) will be shared via google classroom.
You will be encouraged to do extra reading outside class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The tutor is brilliant, full of enthusiasm and a great communicator. It can get a bit complicated at times but you don't have to understand every detail to be inspired by the course and enjoy every minute of it.
