What is the course about?

A talk and walk to explore the history of Southwark before 1650.

What will we cover?

  • Trace the history and geography of medieval and Tudor Southwark
  • Locate key sites including the brothels of Bankside, the Marshalsea Prison and the Rose and Globe theatres.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No prior knowledge is necessary, but a good understanding of English is essential as is the ability to walk about two miles. The walk is mainly on the level. You should be able to follow health and safety instructions and participate positively and constructively in any debates/class discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be a PowerPoint presentation and seminar-style discussion of original sources (in translation) in the morning and a guided walk in the afternoon. You will see all the sites listed on the handout (distributed in class) although not necessarily in the same order!

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

For the morning you need only bring note-taking materials if you wish to do so. All necessary reading materials will be provided.  For the walk after lunch, you are advised to wear comfortable shoes and bring a bottle of water. Vanessa has been known as a rain goddess so you might bring an umbrella if the forecast looks dodgy!

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Vanessa runs a range of courses across London, British, European and Global and Imperial History. Please see our website for further details.
