Watercolour: cityscapes for beginners

This course is an introduction to working in watercolours on location in the city. Some sessions will take place in the studio where you will be guided through exercises in colour mixing and watercolour techniques particular to cityscapes. You will build up your confidence to be able put these skills into practice on location.


What is the course about?

This is an exciting, in depth watercolour class where you will explore the potential of this versatile medium, trying a range of techniques with an emphasis on colour and layering. We will discover watercolour techniques in the studio, and then practice your new-found skills painting with watercolour on location. The first session is at City Lit then the remainder of the class we will be outside in various central London locations.

What will we cover?

The course will cover colour mixing including primary, secondary and tertiary colour mixing. We will explore different mark making techniques particular to watercolour e.g. wet on wet, dry brush etc.
We will visit a variety of London locations to paint on site. This may include Somerset House, to introduce painting architecture and skies, the Thames riverside - to paint water and bridges, and the Embankment gardens to paint foliage.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Colour mix with watercolour and identify different colour mixes to paint foliage, skies and buildings.
• Identify and have the knowledge to use different watercolour techniques to portray different subjects in the City, i.e. wet on wet technique for clouds
• Build up the confidence to paint outside in the city.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course can be seen as a refresher or appropriate for beginners.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by demonstration, individual and group tuition and discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will be given advice on the first session but you will need a watercolour sketchbook A3/4 plus a large brush.
