Watercolour: cityscapes themes and ideas

In this more advanced class for students with some experience in using watercolour, we will build on more advanced colour mixing, mark making and watercolour techniques particular to painting on location. In this course there will be more emphasis on developing a personal style and you will be encouraged to pursue an individual approach to cityscapes as the term develops.

What is the course about?

This is a more advanced, in depth watercolour class for students who already have some experience of this versatile medium. You will be encouraged to develop your own style of watercolour painting and also be introduced to themed compositions particular to using watercolour. We will be painting in different venues in London, for example, down by the Thames, Embankment Gardens, and other various locations in London.

What will we cover?

We will cover primary, secondary and tertiary colour mixing. We will also concentrate on various green colour mixing to depict foliage, and the particular mixing of colour for skies, buildings and paintings of the River. We will experiment with approaches to composition and watercolour paint handling techniques.
You will look at a diverse range of artists' work on the theme of cityscapes, focussing in on the variety of approaches, ideas and techniques used.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Improve your understanding of colour mixing
- Vary your approach to mark making to paint skies, buildings and foliage
- Improve on your composition skills
- Gain confidence in developing a personal approach to watercolours.
- Be able to recognise a range of artists working in watercolour on the theme of cityscapes.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is aimed at students who have some previous knowledge of watercolour painting. Ideal if you have completed a beginners or intermediate level watercolour course.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by demonstration, individual and group tuition and discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to bring a watercolour sketchbook, A3 or 4 plus a large watercolour brush. Advice will be give on this at the first session.
