What is the course about?

This reading club is for learners at Level 3 upper / Level 4. It will involve reading aloud in Welsh and discussing, which will help consolidate grammar patterns learnt on City Lit Welsh courses, as well as broadening vocabulary, pronunciation, and intonation of whole phrases.

What will we cover?

Students will continue reading literature started earlier in the year. Please contact Clare.Whitehead@Citylit.ac.uk for more information.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- have a wider vocabulary.
- have improved pronunciation.
- have had an introduction to Welsh literature.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

  • Level 3/4 (CEFR: B2 and approaching B2)
  • Experience:at least 4 years of language study
  • The reading material used in this class is at CEFR level B2.

Choose a Level 3/4 course if you can:

  • Understand authentic spoken content of moderate to high complexity (e.g., interviews, adverts, news broadcasts).
  • Grasp specific details and general meaning from routine and slightly complex telephone calls.
  • Follow instructions for everyday tasks (e.g., games, recipes, using equipment or installing software).
  • Read and understand authentic texts such as press articles and literary extracts, and produce clear written summaries.
  • Participate in conversations with native speakers using a good range of mostly accurate language.
  • Express and argue viewpoints convincingly in spoken or written form.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- Preparation for each class: You will have to read one chapter prior to the class to familiarise yourself with the text.
- Work in class: You will look at the chapter read in more details (vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar…) with the tutor and/or the other students through pair and small group discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please contact Clare.Whitehead@Citylit.ac.uk for information about the text(s) that will be covered.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

City Lit offers a range of in-person and online Welsh classes, workshops and reading groups.
