The aim of this course is to give students the opportunity to practise using Welsh in a wider range of contexts and for a wider range of purposes; to expand their grammatical and communicative abilities in the language; and to promote interest in and awareness of the language and its culture today.
What will we cover?
The grammar covered will include; the passive, noun clauses connecting emphatic statements, dates, and 'this' and 'that'.
Topics will include; leisure activities, folk tales.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Read and respond to news bulletins using the passive voice (-wyd). - Construct emphatic clauses, and link them into more extended sentences using 'taw'/'mai'. - Say when an event is happening giving the precise date. - Compare items using 'this' and 'that', 'these' and 'those'.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Students should have actively studied Welsh for approximately 2.5 years). You should know the basic word orders of Welsh and know how to form sentences in the present, past and future. You should be able to accurately answer “yes” and “no” (using the different forms of the verb ‘to be’). You should be able to ask for help in Welsh when you don’t understand. This course is at CEFR Level B1.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course is based on the communicative approach:
- active students’ interaction - emphasis on speaking and listening skills - pair and group work - role plays - use of realia, pictures and authentic material - use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate
Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Esme is a Welsh tutor at City Lit, where she teaches engaging online classes. She is passionate about helping students gain confidence in speaking Welsh, encouraging them to embrace mistakes as part of the learning process and to use the language in real conversations.Her online lessons offer learners opportunities to practise Welsh in a variety of ways—through structured activities, guided conversations, interactive exercises, and plenty of speaking practice. Esme focuses on creating a relaxed, supportive environment where learners feel comfortable joining in, experimenting with new language, and building their fluency step by step. Originally from Prestatyn, Esme was inspired by her teachers to study Welsh at Cardiff University before completing her PGCE in Welsh Secondary Education. She went on to teach in South Wales secondary schools for 11 years and has since built extensive experience teaching Welsh to adults, both privately and in community settings. She now lives on the Llyn Peninsula with her family, where she continues to share her love of the Welsh language with learners near and far.
