Learn how to make traditional or contemporary baskets. Follow a project of your choice to create beautiful, functional baskets. Beginners will learn to weave willow; those of you with experience will use more complex techniques to improve your finish.


What is the course about?

This three day workshop will guide beginners through the basics of stake and strand basketry. For advanced students you have the opportunity to learn new weaves and experiment with shape. You can work on one large basket or make two small baskets. You will be provided with a thorough reference to traditional and contemporary designer makers. Learn how willow is grown and prepared and how to use basketry tools.

What will we cover?

We will cover the growing, selection and preparation of willow. Learn how to make round and oval bases. Plus, several weaving techniques including pairing, waling, French randing, packing, zig zag weave, rope weave, interlacing and various rod borders and handles.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- select suitable willow for different stages of the basket
- weave willow using several different techniques
- complete one or two round or oval baskets

Advanced students should be able to:
- build on existing basketry knowledge
- explore how weaves can be manipulated to give different effects
- experiment with shaping the sides of the basket
- make cross handles or/and twisted rod handles.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This workshop is for beginners and for those who have made some willow baskets but would like to reinforce their basic skills.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through practical demonstrations both to the group and to individuals. Group discussions and feedback are encouraged.
