What is the course about?

You will be introduced to the process of wood block printing by combining hand cut marks and laser engraving. We will concentrate on how we can use laser engraving and laser cutting as part of relief printing through building vivid compositions to create your own imagery.

What will we cover?

Basic Photoshop and InDesign skills to transform your imagery into vectors, followed by turning them into laser cut/engraved wood blocks. How to use a variety of methods, eg: carving, cutting, stippling, laser cutting, laser engraving; to create your composition and how to layer accordingly. You will be producing multiple wood blocks, both hand cut and laser cut.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • Use cutting tools confidently to create a rich variety of marks
  • Make relief prints by the reduction method
  • Turn images into vector files suitable for laser cutting/engraving
  • Make and use a registration template for multiple block printing

Print using a relief press and burnish by hand.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suited for absolute beginners to professional artists looking to learn how to print using various relief methods. No particular skills are required. You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English for both health and safety purposes and to enable you to follow printmaking procedures.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through a series of demonstrations and workshops.  Technical information will be supported by the students individual note taking and throughout the sessions will you will guided by your tutor.
There is no requirement to complete work outside of the class however bringing along ideas and imagery you may want to work from will improve your outcomes.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All basic materials are provided. You should bring to the first class, sources of imagery to be used for reference / visual inspiration (sketches, magazine cutting, on-going work etc.) as a way in to starting personal projects.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

There are further opportunities for pursuing printmaking courses - ask your tutor for guidance. Alternatively there are skills based and creative approach courses in other processes such as intaglio or relief. Again please consult your tutor..
