How do you work with clients who have alcohol or substance misuse problems? You will be encouraged to draw on your existing skills and experiences to learn new ways of working with addiction such as 'motivational interviewing'. This course is aimed at counsellors, other helping professionals and trainees. It is not aimed at people seeking help for the specific course subjects.

This course will be delivered online. See the ‘What is the course about?’ section in course details for more information.

What is the course about?

The course offers an introduction to the field of addiction by providing you with theoretical reference and practical skills which you can develop and integrate into your working practice.

This is a live online course. You will need:

- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for trainee counsellors who have an interest in addiction and for professionals who are likely to come across clients with addiction problems. You will need to be a fluent speaker of English, be able to listen to complex information and respond to others as well as take part in group discussion and role plays. You will be required to participate in written exercises.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You should expect a combination of lecturing, group and class dicussions as well as other activities and role-play. In order to gain the maximum benefit from the course it is advisable to read all the material issued by the tutor.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Textbooks are available in libraries but buying at least one of the recommended texts would be helpful if you are interested in the field of addiction. The tutor will give out a list of recommended texts at the start of the course.
