What is the course about?

Known for its bright white colour, translucent properties and high firing temperatures, this specialist course explores hand building with Porcelain clay. Working with Ming Porcelain, your tutor will guide you in how to handle this delicate clay body, exploring different approaches to making to enable you to build a relationship with this special material.

You will be expected to bring your own ideas of themes and designs, sketchbooks and visual diaries are encouraged, your Tutor will support you in realising them in the 3D. 

What will we cover?

Learners will experience a wide range of hand building techniques tailored specifically to working with Porcelain clay. Over the 6 sessions you will gain an understanding of the properties and behaviour of this clay body, learning how to handle it and use it to be able to realise your ideas and develop your Artistic practice. With demonstrations and instruction, you will gain confidence, skills and knowledge to be able to work with specialised clay bodies more independently.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

   -You will learn a brief history of porcelain clay

  -Gain an understanding of the properties, suitability and uses porcelain

  -You will concentrate on producing a small collection of porcelain sculpture(s) over the 6 sessions

  - Work will be left to dry slowly and it will be single fired to Stoneware

  -You will receive demonstration and instruction on hand building techniques

  -Gain a knowledge of contemporary Artists and practices focusing specialising in porcelain

  -Practise and improve your skills in making ceramic forms.

  -Set further goals in discussion with the tutor 

  -Be aware of and work to health and safety guidelines of the ceramic studio 

  -Be able to use and keep a working sketchbook

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is not suitable for beginners, previous experience of working with clay is advised. With guidance, using skills learnt, learners will be expected to create their own personal projects, keep sketchbooks/visual diaries of ideas and inspiration and objects you would like to make.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching will take place through a blend of studio demonstrations, practical group and individual projects, presentations, discussions and ongoing personal feedback.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Some materials are included. Tools are available within the department for use but you may want to purchase your own. Your tutor will advise you which tools to purchase. There is a charge of £2.75 per 500g for clay before firing, the porcelain charge is £24.00 per bag/ £12.00 per half bag. Ensure that you bring with you a suitable pair of closed shoes, e.g. not open toed sandals. You will be expected to show good workshop practice and follow health and safety guidelines.
