What is the course about?
An introduction to playing technique on congas. Study of the music that uses these drums.
What will we cover?
We will learn some of the fundamental conga patterns of rumba and salsa. We will play these patterns "in clavé" in the right relationship to the pulse and clavé timeline. We will practise the hand shapes that produce good tones, and learn hand exercises( manoteos). The emphasis will be on playing as a group and creating a repertoire of rhythms and styles.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Play essential grooves on conga, and have tried out clavés, bell and shekere.
Play as an ensemble and lock in to pulse and groove
Read and interpret percussion notation.
Listen to the music with enhanced critical skills.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
No experience necessary, we welcome beginners, 'improvers' and experienced players who want to practise in a group with supervision and coaching.
You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English, and engage in discussion and practical group tasks.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Drums and accessory percussion will be supplied for class sessions. You will be expected to practise hand exercises between sessions.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
We recommend you record parts of the session, and/or use a mobile 'phone with a camera to capture demonstrations.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Latin percussion study.
