Description

What is the course about?

Explore and be inspired by the joyous sounds of South African township music. This is practical course : learn repertoire and play as an ensemble by reading band arrangements of popular songs.

What will we cover?

You will learn to play a few of tunes often referred to as "Township" repertoire, by composers Abdullah Ibrahim, Kippie Moeketsi, Jonas Gwangwa and Barney Rachabane.
Through these tunes you will develop listening and ensemble skills. We will also explore approaches to improvising over simple chord structures in an appropriate style.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- demonstrate knowledge of Township music styles
- have learned repertoire by ear and by reading notation
- play arrangements of South African tunes
- improvise in an appropriate way through enhanced understanding of S A harmony and style.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You need to play your instrument well enough to contribute to the class ensemble, and be able to read a score (front line instruments) and chord chart (rhythm section).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In addition to music charts, there will be recordings to listen to and tutor demonstration to follow. Paul will conduct the class as an ensemble.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring your instrument, and a jack lead if you have guitar or bass.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

the Afro Cuban Ensemble is a similar practical course.
