Whether you want to write about tennis, athletics or the Women's Premier League, this short introductory course offers guidance on crafting quality sports news and features for online, print and broadcast. The course includes expert guidance from an ex-BBC sports editor and numerous guest speakers currently working in sports journalism.

What is the course about?

This course is the perfect springboard for students with an interest in sport who wish to enhance their journalism skills. Taught in a practical, interactive and supportive manner, this course teaches the key elements of sports reporting both on and off the pitch.

The Tutor
Charles Runcie is former head of BBC Sport in the English regions and has over thirty years of experience as a BBC journalist.

- What are the different mediums of sports journalism?
- What makes a good sports journalist?
- What are the different types of sports journalism?
- How do I write in the sports genre effectively?
- What are the key considerations relating to law, finance and the media?

By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Understand the different mediums of sports journalism
- Understand what makes a good sports journalist
- Understand the different types of journalism and attempt to write in the genre for yourself.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course open to writers at all levels.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- Group learning, with presentation, slides and AV followed by discussion and Q+A
- Practical work exercises
- Speeches delivered by guests from the sports media
- Pair work
- Formal instruction from the tutor.
