Do you want to improve your communication skills and become a more confident reader, writer, speaker and listener in English? On this course, you will develop all your English language skills so you can act confidently in the most important everyday situations inside and outside work. You will become a skilled communicator when writing, using digital resources and in face-to-face interactions. You will develop your active listening skills so you can understand and empathise better. You will work on how to express yourself when speaking in different situations. You will practise your reading so you can see the whole picture and find details, make effective decisions about what you read, and prioritise matters. You will focus on your writing so you can write whole stories, letters, emails and other expressive texts. By the end of this three-term programme, you will be a competent speaker, listener, reader and writer both at work and home and ready to do exams such as Functional Skills Level 2.

During the course you will develop skills in learning independently, communicating with your tutor and other students. You will develop your ability to use your own initiative, carry out research and complete tasks either independently or in collaboration with others.
The course is practical and the skills you learn can be used in everyday life situations. There are no exams to this course.

This course is suitable if you have arrived in the UK from abroad and/or missed out on the education at school due to communication barriers. This course is to help you to develop your basic communication skills in various social settings such as starting, maintaining and ending the conversations, confirming your understanding of the conversation flow and/or ask for clarification if/when necessary, asking and answering questions on various social topics etc. You will also develop basic study skills to help you to complete simple tasks and do homework on your own.
