What is the course about?

This course will be held online . This short fast paced course is an excellent taster course for those wishing to enter the world of filmmaking. You will be taught some basic film making skills including, composition, camera movement and their meanings, how to use HD cameras to frame and record shots, import and edit clips into premiere Pro CC and export your sequence as a movie.

What will we cover?

- Framing your shot, camera angles and movement and their uses.
- Recording image and sound with an HD camera
- Editing in Premiere Pro CC; A basic introduction to the software and to some editing techniques.
- Exporting your final film for publishing online.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Understand the uses of different framing and camera movement.
- understand what HD camera settings to use to record images and sound.
- Use basic editing techniques in Premiere Pro CC to edit a short film
- Be able to export your movie using the appropriate codec.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a beginners’ course.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught using a range of techniques including online workshops, short lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, group and individual advice and guidance as well as hand-outs. You will be expected to work individually and you can also use those in your support bubble, if available.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The latest professional software are available for your use at home free of charge throughout the course. It would be useful to have access to an HD camera and have a memory stick (or portable hard drive).

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can develop your skills further in VG397 Narrative film making or VG540 Start filming and compositing with green screen.

David Kline

David Kline is a filmmaker with experience as a scriptwriter, producer, director and editor. He started in film work via a fortuitous, personal link to the US actor, writer, director and producer Laurence Fishburne. David assisted Mr Fishburne in the development of a screen adaptation of a well-known novella (Paulo Coelho's 'The Alchemist') for Warner Brothers. David has since worked as a script reader and reporter for several UK film agencies including Script Factory, Scottish Screen and Northern Ireland Screen. He has written numerous short film scripts and produced several, including 'On the Edge' which won Best Drama (Diamond Award) at the European Independent Film Awards 2018 and 'Game Over' a co-write with Director Adam Jenkins featuring Blake Harrison, Gemma Whelan and Naomi Battrick, which was officially selected for the LA Shorts International Film Festival 2018 and London Short Film Festival 2019. David has also written several spec full length, feature film screenplays in a range of genres from horror to thriller to family drama. He is an experienced and qualified teacher and trainer.
