What is the course about?
On this course you will learn a range of techniques for creating attractive, personalised papers for bookbinding and other craft projects. You will be able to try out Suminigashi (Japanese marbling), making paste papers and dip-dyeing techniques to create your own beautiful papers. You will also be able to add further decorative techniques to your papers by using rubber stamps which you will learn how to make. There will be plenty of examples to inspire you and by the end of the day you will leave with a stack of papers and some ideas for how to use them.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in making decorative papers using the techniques described. No experience is necessary but a willingness to experiment will be an advantage.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught through demonstration, practice and discussion as a group, and individually as required. Handouts will accompany demonstrations. This is a one day course designed to introduce a range of decorative paper techniques which you will be able to use at home when the course is finished. Information about materials and equipment will be supplied.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
All tools and materials will be supplied but if you wish to supplement this with your own papers for further experimentation then please do bring them. A pencil and notebook will be useful and an apron, as some of this course is quite messy.

Sue Doggett is an artist who creates hand-made books and bindings. She gained a first class honours degree in Visual Studies and Art History from Oxford Brookes University in 1985 and an MA in Design from Brighton University in 1998. She received the World Craft Council Award for Contemporary Craft in 1994 and was elected a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 1996. She has lectured and led workshops in book arts in the UK, Europe and the USA and is currently teaching on the BA (Hons) Graphic Design course at Camberwell College of Arts and is a bookbinding and book arts tutor at City Lit. As an exhibiting Fellow of Designer Bookbinders, Sue works to public and private commission including the Man Booker Prize for Fiction and she is the current editor of ‘The New Bookbinder’ journal. Her work is represented in public and private collections in Europe and USA and can be seen at the Hyman Kreitman Research Library, Tate Britain; The Folger Library, Washington DC; Yale University Library, The Bodleian Library, Oxford; The Centre for Fine Print Research, Bristol and Manchester Metropolitan Museum.
