Deaf Day 2024

Now in its 26th year, Deaf Day is a free annual one-day event to celebrate Deaf culture, welcoming visitors from all corners of the UK.  It is an opportunity for Deaf and hard of hearing people to get together, socialise and celebrate Deaf provision and the Deaf community - increasing our social impact and strengthening the community.  We also welcome hearing people including those who work with the Deaf community; are learning sign language; have Deaf relatives or friends; or are just interested and curious about the provision we offer.

The event reflects the rich and vibrant Deaf culture, where visitors meet old friends and make new ones, find information, and network with individuals from across the UK and Europe.

This year’s Deaf Mosaic 2024 exhibition at City Lit Gallery will be a group show featuring five deaf photographers. As well as exhibiting his latest work, former student Stephen Illife introduces us to four exciting new deaf photography talents: Peace Adesun, Mareah Ali, Isabella Giddins and Shalom Nuhu. Each is a recent photography degree graduate (or is in their final year). Each brings their own visual perspective to the deaf experience.

Deaf Day is a free event, everyone is welcome!

About City Lit's Centre for Deaf Education

City Lit has provided support for Deaf people right from our establishment, in 1919. Some of the first courses ever offered by City Lit were lipreading classes for deafened soldiers returning from World War I. Over the years, we have grown to become an internationally-renowned Centre for Deaf Education with a wide range of provision – it is the largest centre of its kind in Europe. Our staff is a mixed group of deaf and hearing professionals; all highly skilled in their own areas of specialist expertise.
