Debating involves generating persuasive arguments and communicating these effectively with your audience. Practising this skill will help you to develop your confidence in both delivering planned content and thinking on your feet, skills that are applicable to a range of situations such as presentations, meetings and interviews. This course is specifically for people who stammer and will provide a supportive environment for you to work on your speech and communication.

What is the course about?

This course is about developing your skills and confidence in speaking in front of an audience. It may be that you have previously held back from speaking in these types of situations whilst at the same time having a desire to stretch your comfort zones. This course will help you with balancing content and style as well as giving you an opportunity to work on managing stammering.

What will we cover?

-Constructing convincing arguments
-Communicating assertively and persuasively
-Overview and exercises in effective verbal and non-verbal communication
-Ways of working positively on your stammering.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

*Generate convincing arguments and respond to opposing arguments
*Communicate assertively and clearly
*Manage your stammering in ways that put you more at ease in front of an audience.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course for people who stammer and who may or may not have had any previous speech therapy. To access the course you will need to have an adequate level of English to:
- Express your opinions and feelings
- Follow discussions and make relevant contributions
- Make use of handouts with some assistance if necessary.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There is a large component of practical work. Visual aids including video and handouts are used. Work will be undertaken both in the whole group and smaller sub-groups using a wide variety of activities.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no other real costs although you are asked to bring a notebook to sessions.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can do a Stage 1 evening course or one of our intensive courses if you haven't attended one previously. Alternatively you can do any of our topic-based workshops or evening classes, such as Public Speaking or Mindfulness for people who stammer.

Cathinka Guldberg

Cathinka has worked as a Speech and Language Therapist for over 30 years, both in the NHS and independent practice as well as in adult education. She has spent the recent years of her career specialising exclusively in working with adults who stammer, both in groups and one-to-one. She also has a degree in Psychology and has attended training in a number of therapeutic approaches, such a Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Mindfulness and Counselling, and integrates these skills into her work with adults who stammer. Cathinka has extensive experience of giving presentations and providing training to large and small audiences and has developed a special interest in the skill of public speaking. She runs regular public speaking courses at City Lit for people who stammer and has recently contributed to a professional text for speech and language therapists on the topic of public speaking for people who stammer.
