What is the course about?

Take your After Effects animation skills to the next level with this advanced practical course that explores techniques for both character animation and special effects work. You will learn how to effectively create and animate 3D text, shapes and models, write simple code expressions to control animation, use motion tracking to insert designed elements into live action footage, and a handful of other production proven techniques and tips. This could prove invaluable to enhance your After Effects practice.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

-Using Motion tracking to link designed elements to live footage
-Applying coded expressions to your work to control different functions
-Using Cinema 4Dlite to create and animate 3D text and objects
-Exploring free and paid plugins that can enhance your workflow
-Linking with other Adobe software: importing techniques.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- track footage and attach graphic elements to specific points on layers
- use basic coded expressions to control animation functions
- create and animate simple 3D elements with Cinema4Dlite
- have an awareness of free and paid plugins for certain tasks
- use proper importing procedures for getting assets into AEFX from other Adobe software.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a fairly technical advanced course. You would be expected to have completed an introductory After Effects course and feel comfortable in applying 2D and 3D transformations and a range of effects to layers.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught using a range of techniques including short lectures, demonstrations, group and individual assistance and hand-outs. Please note the City Lit uses Apple Mac computers in Animation, Cartooning, Digital arts, Film, Graphics, Illustration, Photography and Web design.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The latest professional equipment and software are available for your use throughout the course. It would be useful to bring a memory stick (or portable hard drive – please note PC formatted hard drives can be read by Apple mac computers, but not written to.).

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

City Lit offer a range of courses in 2D and 3D Animation, Adobe Animate, Adobe After Effects, Character animation, editing, sound, illustration, cartooning, storyboarding and adobe Photoshop to enhance your animation practice.

Benjamin Austin

Ben has been animating professionally for over 15 years and has worked on music videos, adverts, tv shows and short films that have been shown around the world. He has worked in different roles in large and small studios and independently. He specialises in character-based 3D CGI and 2D digital animation, and has a background in shooting Stop-Motion and 2D work on film. He is a practising animator and divides his time between teaching and commercial work. “Animation is a subject I have been passionate about for as long as I can remember. I still get excited about the magic of bringing something imagined to life through a drawing or 3D puppet. I enjoy the combination of the creative and technical, and all the problem-solving required throughout the process. It is hugely rewarding teaching at Citylit and helping give people the confidence to create their own animated work.”
