Develop your confidence in writing: finding the right tone and improving your style (level 1-2)

Course Dates: 03/02/22 - 31/03/22
Time: 18:15 - 20:45
Location: Online
When you write an email at work or letter to a friend, do you wonder how you come across? Have you ever looked at someone else’s writing and noticed how their words and phrases seem just right; that the formality is appropriate for the reader and level of detail suitable and fit for purpose? Just as your style of clothing can set the tone of an occasion, be more or less appropriate and create different impressions, so can your choice of words and a good writer considers these different aspects. This course you will help you analyse pieces of writing and apply what you learn to texts both inside and outside the workplace so you can adapt your style, tone and register to impact and influence the reader in the way you think best.
You will need to complete a pre-course assessment. Contact universal.skill@citylit.ac.uk / 020 7492 2511 or click the Start Assessment button on the webpage. Please log in with your email (not name). Use Chrome if possible.

What is the course about?

This course is about becoming aware of the impact of your writing on the reader. It is about finding the right tone, adopting the best style and use the most appropriate register in your writing both inside or outside of work. You will learn how to convey ideas effectively depending on the audience and purpose of the text. The course will help you to understand how your choice of words, phrases and sentence structure determine how formal or informal a text should be. You will gain more insight into how your writing can have an emotional impact on a reader. By the end of the course, you will be more confident with when to use descriptive, narrative, persuasive and explanatory styles for different pieces of writing such as messages to friends and family, work emails, official letters, applications or online content.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for fluent speakers of English who want to improve their writing skills, inside or outside the workplace, whose English is approaching GCSE level. It is ideal for anyone who would like to do an English GCSE or Level 2 Functional Skills but does not need or have the time to do the full qualification. It would also be good preparation for anyone wanting to do these qualifications or who would like extra help while currently doing them. However, the focus on this course is on English skills, not passing an exam, so it is ideal for anyone wishing to improve their literacy skills.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn in a supportive and welcoming environment. The tutor will help you discover rules and features of English. You will work on your own and with other students. You will learn in a step by step manner so you can complete challenging tasks in enjoyable and relaxing ways. Your tutor will also work with you individually so you know how to improve. You will need to do work outside the classroom and use Google Classroom to help you.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a lined A4 writing pad, pen, a folder for assignments and any other appropriate stationery. You will be expected to maintain a course folder of handouts and your assignments. If you are on a low income you may be able to apply to the Bursary Fund for help with the costs of the course (e.g. fares, books, materials).
