This course will look at the final phase of a chess game, the endgame. The endgame occurs when there is a reduced amount of material on the board. This course will help the student acquire knowledge of important concepts such as rook activity, the opposition in king and pawn endings and nuances in bishop and knight endings.

What is the course about?

The course looks at themes associated with the endgame.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.

What will we cover?

We will cover Rook Activity, King and Pawn Endings and Strategic Manoeuvring in Bishop and Knight Endings.

You will have a better understanding of endgame motifs which will enhance your chess understanding and ability.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

As a general guide to the level of the class, you should be able to use chess notation and be playing actively online. You should also be comfortable receiving basic instruction from a book about chess endgames.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will be delivered online through tutor presentation and demonstration and discussion. NB: there will be no chess played during the sessions, but the tutor will provide information about online chess-playing opportunities, and will provide examples and exercises for you to work through on your chess boards in between classes.
