What is the course about?

The opening phase of a chess game contains certain key features. We will attend to these in this course. Each student can then open a chess game with confidence and gain the upper hand early on.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

How to approach the opening with confidence and understand the importance of rapid development, the centre and king safety.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Understand how to play the opening with intelligence and confidence.
- Believe that you can approach the middle phase of the game with genuine insight and a proper plan in place.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should be familiar with chess notation, be playing regularly online and already have an awareness of the importance of development, the centre and king safety.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will be delivered online through tutor presentation and demonstration, using illustrative model games, and discussion. NB: there will be no chess played during the sessions, but the tutor will provide information about online chess-playing opportunities, and will provide examples and exercises for you to work through on your chess boards in between classes.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a chess board and pieces. It is helpful if the board has a-h and 1-8 on the horizontal and vertical axes so we can refer to the squares on the board with relative ease.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
