What is the course about?
Having grasped the ideas of strategy & planning it is important to consider how to calculate effectively as a chess player. In this course we will examine basic and more advanced combinations and forced sequences leading to checkmate or decisive material gain. We will also discuss the sacrifice, tactical training, chess puzzles and thinking techniques.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

At the end you will be more proficient at chess calculation, with a new awareness of forced sequences, pattern recognition and effective thinking techniques.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is suitable for the improving player who plays regularly on the internet and enjoys solving chess puzzles. Ideally students should own a few chess books or videos and be willing and able to work through these in their own time. Students should also be familiar with chess notation.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course will be delivered online through tutor presentation and demonstration and discussion. NB: there will be no chess played during the sessions, but the tutor will provide information about online chess-playing opportunities, and will provide examples and exercises for you to work through on your chess boards in between classes.
