What is the course about?

This course will help you to learn how to manage stress, and develop a bounce back response to stressful situations. The course will give you a psychological skill set, which can help you to manage your mind when the stress hits, as well as focus on what’s important, so you can stay on track, even when life gets tough.
The course is based on the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (“ACT”). ACT is an evidence-based approach to building resilience, which in this course, utilises a combination of cognitive behavioural coaching and mindfulness training.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

• An introduction to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
• How the mind responds to stress.
• Strategies and skills which can help to manage stress and build resilience.
• The relationship between resilience, values and motivation, which can help to develop resilience and enable the ability to function even in a stressful situation.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Understand the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in relation to resilience.
• Identify the mind’s responses to stress.
• Learn a number of strategies and psychological skills, which can help to manage stress and build resilience.
• Understand the association between personally held values and resilience.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge, skills or experience are necessary. To access the course the students will need to be able to understand and express themselves in English. Students must also be willing be open to the experience of other students.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be presentation by the tutor, along with active discussion (both in pairs and as a group) and skill based exercises. Movement is involved in some of the exercises, but this can be adapted for students who may have physical difficulties. Homework involves practicing skills/strategies.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no other costs. Although handouts will be given, students may want to bring pen and notebook/paper in order to take their own notes.
