Explore the role of the imagination in painting and drawing. Develop a toolkit of methods for stimulating, sustaining and enriching your imaginative engagement through a series of guided practical painting and drawing exercises.
The aim of the course is to investigate the role of the imagination in drawing and painting and to explore new ways of seeing and experiencing the world around us.

What is the course about?

Explore the richness of drawing and painting from the imagination through a variety of practical methods and guided exercises to help access, develop and sustain your imaginative engagement. On the course, you will employ range of methods and approaches and work from a variety of sources of inspiration, as a gateway to the imagination. You will practice a range of drawing and painting methods and approaches to help you find ways of expressing your self with increased freedom and confidence. Suitable for enthusiastic beginners to drawing and painting as well as those with experience who wish to refresh their practice or expand their skills.

What will we cover?

During the course we will explore ways of accessing the imagination and create drawings and paintings from a variety of sources of inspiration. You will be introduced to a range of artists work and their sources of inspiration ranging from everyday life, to landscape, colour and visionary experience. Each session will offer some skills input e.g. on colour, creative process, painting methods, ways of developing your own subject matter and articulating your experience directly through the medium of drawing and painting. You will develop a toolkit of painting methods and approaches that will inform your work into the future. There will be a guided mindfulness meditation practice each day to aid concentration in your painting practice.

- Draw and paint from your imagination
- Employ a toolkit of resources to access, free-up and sustain your imaginative engagement
- Develop a body of work from initial sources
- Identify how mindfulness can support creative practice.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for enthusiastic beginners to drawing and painting as well as those with experience who wish to refresh their practice or expand their skills in this subject area. Bring an open mind and be prepared to let go, play and experiment.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations and hand-outs, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

Please note that this course will be taught with reference to acrylic paint (not oil or watercolour).

- Through demonstration of drawing and painting methods

All basic drawing and painting materials will be provided.

Clare Barton-Harvey

Clare Barton-Harvey is a full time artist and tutor/trainer living in London. In her teaching, she specialises in life drawing, drawing and mindfulness, working with colour, and painting from the imagination. She is an engaging and inspired tutor responsive to individual need and encouraging of individual growth/expression. In 2003, she studied at the Royal Drawing School, where she engaged in life drawing and the study of contemporary and historic artist’s drawings as part of the Drawing Year. In 2017 she engaged in post-graduate study with Bob and Roberta Smith (RA) and has exhibited solo and in a variety of group shows throughout the UK. You can see her work at www.cbarton-harvey.co.uk. Clare has been a practicing artist & mindfulness practitioner for over 25 years, and has taught drawing and painting for over 18 years, in a variety of locations currently including the National Gallery, British Museum, British Library, Pallant House and Hampton Court Palace. She is also co-founder of LIMINA collective (www.liminacollective.com) who specialise in mindful engagement with art in galleries and museums.
