By experimenting with different drawing mediums play with the picture plane in a drawing to achieve an illusion of depth. Using observational drawing make a still life come alive through the play of contrast and cast shadows.

What is the course about?

This course investigates different ways in which space can be manipulated through drawing to create the illusion of pictorial form and depth, employing a variety of methods, techniques and mediums.

What will we cover?

Layering of different materials to create an illusion of depth
Tonal contrasts to explore light and shadow
Basic techniques of perspective
Overlapping of objects to determine their position within a pictorial space.
Foreshortening to manipulate objects in space.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Identify and manipulate contrasts of light and shadow to depict objects in space.
Apply basic methods of perspective to manipulate depth
Explore light direction to form pictorial illusion and atmosphere
Explore scale and detail to distinguish foreground and background objects.
Experiment with different drawing materials.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for both beginners and those with some drawing experience. Some drawing skills are helpful but not essential. Basic techniques of drawing approaches and materials will be demonstrated by the tutor and supported through both one to one and group discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through explanations and demonstrations of approaches and techniques, visual examples of artwork relating to particular exercises and guidance with practical work through one on one support.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic materials will be provided but you are welcome to bring any of your own materials.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

This course will be a good introduction and helpful for any further drawing courses such as Drawing 1 or 2.

Amanda Bracken Tutor Website

Amanda Bracken started her teaching career at the Serpentine Gallery, researching, developing and delivering projects to a range of audiences, which illuminated the art work on show in the exhibition programme, including a teachers’ pack for the Bridget Riley exhibition. She also gained substantial experience developing projects and workshops within the education departments of The Drawing Room, the Estorick collection, The National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria Miro Gallery in particular Alice Neel: Portraits. Bracken holds an MA in Fine Art gained at Central Saint Martins. She also holds a BA in joint Art/Dance and a PGCE gained at Goldsmiths College London. Brackens paintings, drawings and installations have been selected for exhibitions in London and nationally including the Drawing Room, ASC Gallery, C and C Gallery and Atkinson Gallery Millfield. ‘I am interested in colour and form in all its permutations and the qualities of the substance of painting and drawing-the figurative, the abstract and the in-between. Citylit has a diverse Art department where I can use my experience to stimulate students to develop their own work'.
