What is the course about?

The etching process offers a wonderful array of mark making possibilities. This course provides a technical introduction to the experimental application of resists as well as instruction on inking and wiping strategies that will optimise these effects when printed.

What will we cover?

You will explore techniques such as spit bite, sugar lift and open bite as well as experiment with alternative resists creating a range of marks, tones and textures. In addition you will be encouraged to consider inking approaches such as a la poupée and surface roll to enhance the layered properties of these techniques.
You tutor will support you to develop you own imagery and build your confidence working independently in the print room.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

You will produce etching plates and prints using the techniques demonstrated. You will gain the skills and confidence to apply these processes when working on etching plates in the future.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for intermediate and advanced learners, an understanding of basic etching techniques is desirable. You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English for both health and safety purposes and to enable you to follow printmaking procedures. You should be able to take short written notes for your own use.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through a series of demonstrations and workshops. Technical information will be supported with handouts and throughout the sessions will you will guided by your tutor.
There is no requirement to complete work outside of the class however bringing along ideas and imagery you may want to work from will improve your outcomes.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The course fee covers some basic materials such as inks, acids and white spirit. A good quality paper and a limited amount of plates, additional plates can be purchased at cost in the class. Please bring rags for cleaning.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You may wish to continue experimenting with etching and enroll for VS746 Monday Print studio or VS302 Friday Print club or perhaps expand your repertoire on VS711 Etching and Photoetching intensive.
