What is the course about?
This course will help you develop your communication skills in Dutch in a wide range of situations. You will
learn the vocabulary and idioms you need to cope with more complex situations and discussions. You will re-
inforce and expand your knowledge of grammar through conversational exercises.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
The topics include: getting to know new people and small talk, having guests at home, the use of u and jij, everyday situations, The Hague and other Dutch and Flemish cities, invitations, the Dutch gezelligheid.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- listen to conversations and understand where people are talking about
- give and respond to compliments, show surprise and agree with someone
- use informal spoken Dutch
- talk about leisure activities, day trips and holidays
- describe places of interest
- respond to an invitation
- leave a message on an answering machine
- write a small article about a city or town you have lived in
- discuss and consult with someone: ask for their preferences, make a proposal, and accept or reject a proposal.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is aimed at people who have successfully completed a Dutch course of about two years. People may also have acquired conversational skills in the language by living in the Netherlands or Flanders for a longer time.

You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and read course documents in English and be at ease with the use of number for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, etc).
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Having finished my MA in Communication Sciences paired with foreign languages, I went straight into tourism, working for airlines, tourism operators and cruise ships. As a tour guide working within Europe, I have had the pleasure to meet and greet wonderful people from all over the world. Ditto when working as a Dutch, Italian and German interpreter/translator on board cruise ships. Languages are the keys to new cultures, and I love helping people to open new doors. I am currently doing an MA in Creative Writing next to my tutoring assignments, so who knows? I might also be teaching creative writing at some stage. I look forward to many hours of fun language lessons with Citylit students!
