What is the course about?
To give practice time and consideration to aural skills.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
Practice of intervals, rhythm, and recognition of form and quality of sound. Involves singing, writing musical examples, clapping, and active listening.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- hear quality and size of basic intervals, and explore them within the major scale.
- hear the major or minor quality of chords.
- discern time signature, on-beat and off-beat rhythms.
- be more confident about recognising what you hear.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Experience of playing is essential, and basic reading skills will be expected. No formal ear training is expected: this course will provide such a basis. Useful as a refresher, though, for students who have done ear training courses.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
- Listening to and singing musical structures with and without piano guidance.
- Practice of intervals - recognition and singing.
- Listening to and appraising recorded music.
- taught in the pianos room, you will have the use of keyboards.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
We recommend you record the sessions for practice purposes.
Manuscript paper and audio for practice will be provided.
