What is the course about?

This course prepares learners for the Pearson Functional Skills English Level 1 qualification. It focuses on developing practical reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills needed for everyday life, work, and further education. 

Important Disclaimer: 

Before enrolling on this accredited Pearson Functional Skills English Level 1 course, all students must first complete the unaccredited pre-course Getting Ready for Functional Skills Level 1. This ensures learners are fully prepared and working at the appropriate level for success but does not guarantee progression on to this accredited course, this will be determined by an assessment in week 5 of the unaccredited course.  

What will we cover?

  • Understanding and interpreting a range of texts 

  • Writing clearly and effectively for different purposes 

  • Developing grammar, punctuation, and spelling 

  • Speaking and listening in discussions and presentations 

  • Building confidence in using English in real-life contexts 

Course Structure: 

Units and Assessment Breakdown 

1. Reading 

  • Paper-based Exam 

  • Duration: 45 minutes 

  • 40% of the overall qualification 

2. Speaking, Listening and Communicating 

  • One 3-minute individual talk with Q&A 

         One 10-minute group discussion (3–5 learners) 

  • Duration: 10–20 minutes total 

3. Writing 

  • Paper-based exam 

  • Duration: 60 minutes 

  • 60% of the overall qualification 

Exam Dates  

  • Speaking, Listening and communicating= November 2025  

  • Reading= Tuesday 28th April 2026  

  • Writing= Tuesday 5th May 2026

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a Level 1 course an initial assessment will help determine if this course is right for you. It is designed to develop essential skills in reading, writing, and critical thinking.  

Basic Literacy Skills: You should be able to read and write at a basic level. 

  • Commitment and Motivation: The course is demanding and requires dedication and consistent effort. 

  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to analyse texts and understand different viewpoints. 

  • Communication Skills: Willingness to participate in discussions and present ideas clearly. 

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn in a supportive and welcoming environment work both independently and collaboratively with others. Google Classroom is an essential part of your learning, course learning material, communication and independent learning is accessed via this platform. Your course will be taught onsite at the college  

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a folder to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets. 

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Completing Functional skills English level 1 opens the door to a wide range of Level 2 qualifications, such as: 

  • Either Functional skills Level 2 English or GCSE English Language  

  • Access to Higher Education (HE) Diplomas                         For students aiming to enter university (e.g.,                nursing, social work) 

  • Apply for  administrative, retail, or customer service roles 

  • Qualify for apprenticeships in areas like business, healthcare, or digital marketing 

  • Improve your CV and interview skills by demonstrating strong communication abilities 

If you're interested in education, this qualification is a key step toward: 

  • Becoming a Teaching Assistant 

  • Training as an Adult Literacy Tutor 

  • Pursuing a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) later on
