What is the course about?
With an emphasis on an 'experimental' approach to generating images and visualising ideas; this course will cover a combination of both hands-on cut and paste techniques with some digital skills using the latest software. No need to have a design background, you just need to have a curious mind and an interest in delving deeper into the creative world of visual communication.
What will we cover?
- Creative use of typography
- Visual problem solving
- Scanning artwork
- An introduction to Illustrator.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Create visual solutions using both hands-on and digital skills.
- Have an understanding of the basic design elements
- Use Illustrator to create design layouts.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is for beginners.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught with workshops, short demonstrations, practical exercises, tutorials and handouts. Please note the City Lit uses Apple Mac computers in Digital arts, Graphics & Illustration and Photography.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
It would be useful to bring an A4 or A5 hardback sketchbook and you may wish to bring a USB drive if you’d like to take your work home.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Gillian Fielden has been lecturing in Graphic Design and Adobe Design applications at a number of colleges since 2003. In 2018 she completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Visual Communication at UAL LCC and she has Masters Degree from Nottingham Trent University specialising in printed graphics & branding for fashion. Before becoming a lecturer Gillian had extensive commercial experience designing for a variety of fashion and new media companies, producing graphics and merchandising for garments and later moving into web design and production. Currently freelancing on various music design projects and having designed for companies that include, Joe Bloggs, Burton, Littlewoods, BHS, Macmillan Publishers, ITN, IPC and Lycos, she brings a wide range of industry knowledge and experience to her teaching. In 2010 she become involved with the ‘Pop Up Art School’ at ‘Vintage Festival’ running stencil, print and collage workshops at various events around the country.
