What is the course about?

Learn the basics of professional editing package Final Cut Pro X and its techniques. We'll guide you through the language of editing, its conventions and common techniques. You'll work on your own computer using supplied clips to edit short sequences. We will explore various aspects of film editing, both in technical and conceptual terms. This will include basic cutting techniques like inserting and connecting clips, and how to construct a narrative.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

- The Final Cut interface and its windows and functions
- making an edit using the Browser
- Drag&drop editing
- Adjusting audio using keyframes
- Making an append edit
- Making a connect edit
- Understanding the function of a connect edit
- A/B roll editing
- Using the single trimming tool to make a ripple edit.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- use the Event Browser to make a first edit
- adjust audio using keyframes
- perform a connect edit
- perform an append edit
- describe the structure of an A/B roll edit and its use.
- use the single trimming tool to make a ripple edit
- use some essential keyboard shortcuts.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introduction to Final Cut software and the basic principles of editing moving image footage. It will be helpful if you have some computer experience, particularly on Apple Macs, but this not essential.

You will need be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and be prepared to take part in group discussion. You should be happy using numbers and able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each week there will be a demonstration of a particular aspect of Final Cut Pro X. This is then followed by an exercise, allowing for some individual tutorial support. Periodically there will be forum sessions where we will look at each other’s work to discuss different aspects of editing and filmmaking and the post-production process. Asking questions and commenting is encouraged at all times. There will be a range of hand outs to support your learning.
Please note we will be working on Apple Mac computers.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to have a functioning version of Final Cut Pro X installed on your computer prior to the course. It would be useful to bring a memory stick or portable hard drive to save your work.

She is also an award-winning and internationally exhibited/collected artist.
