What is the course about?

In this fun and dynamic course you will learn fundamental Flamenco dance moves, steps and rhythms in an energising and supportive atmosphere. Experience the rich complexity of this Andalucian Gypsy art form, and develop presence, fitness and co-ordination.

What will we cover?

Physical warm-up / cool-down.
Flamenco posture and style.
Basic footwork combinations.
Basic co-ordination of arms / feet / head / wrists / turns.
The origins of Flamenco, its history and multi-cultural roots.
Tuning into Flamenco music with 'palmas' - rhythmic hand-clapping.
Choreography and complete short dances.
End of term presentations and public performance opportunities.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Embody the fundamental Flamenco dance posture and style.
Demonstrate with accuracy a selection of basic footwork combinations.
Use basic co-ordination of arms / feet / head / wrists / turns.
Describe the origins of Flamenco
Distinguish the 'compás' (the rhythmic pulse, the beat) of Flamenco
Perform a selection of short basic choreographies and dances.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for beginners.

A beginner’s dance class isn’t just for newcomers. In any beginner’s dance class there will be student’s from all types of backgrounds. We all have different learning techniques and paces. If your first class seems overwhelming and you can’t get it the first time, don’t worry: dance is heavily reliant on repetition so it will happen. We want you to learn and to have fun so just give it your best and keep coming back!

In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions
• Use numbers to recognise rhythms within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In this practical and dynamic class, you will be taught Flamenco dance by explanation, demonstration, correction, copying, repetition & revision. Whole group work / small groups / pair work in class to consolidate learning. Support in taking notes so as to record learning and to enable you to practise steps between classes. Hand-outs / copies of written material to support practical learning. Optional visits to see recommended Flamenco performances in the London area. Work outside of class might include; viewing of Flamenco videos / DVDs in class / at home, home practice.

You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A folder, notebook & pen

Women: Flamenco dance shoes - the tutor will provide information on shops / websites etc. alternatively, strong court shoes with small strong heel - NO stilettos, sandals, platforms or trainers. Leotards / T-shirts recommended - NO baggy sweatshirts etc. Comfortable trousers initially, Flamenco / flared skirts by term 2.
Men: Flamenco boots - the tutor will provide information on shops / websites etc. alternatively boots with a Cuban heel or leather-soled shoes with slight heel - NO trainers. Comfortable trousers and a waistcoat.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Continue with Flamenco: beginners or speak to the tutor about an improvers class.

VOICE & SPEECH: Having trained at LAMDA (1981-1984) and worked in all media, Danielle has taught the voice module of the Foundation in Drama course since 1995. She continues this with as much enthusiasm as ever, alongside teaching Actor'sVoice, Communication Skills, and Vocal Anatomy. FLAMENCO: Danielle trained in classical ballet, tap and jive, and was drawn to flamenco with all its intricate expressive power. She has taught Flamenco since 1999, and also runs her own company Flamenco Con Gusto, which provides performance opportunities for students of flamenco. DIRECTING: Having performed a decade of monthly full-length improvised plays with FLUXX Theatre, Danielle now writes, directs and choreographs Flamenco Musical Dramas: films and theatre productions that integrate actors’ performances with flamenco dance, music & song. Such productions include 'La Manada' (WAF 2019) and City Lit Theatre Company’s adaptation of Lorca’s play 'YERMA Flamenca' (Spring 2020).
