What is the course about?
Lucian Freud used to say that time was his one great luxury in life. He took a great deal of time to get to know his subjects, and sometimes would be painting them for years. Working rarely to commission, in many ways all of Freud’s painting is autobiographical.
This art history course provides an overview of Freud’s long career and an in depth study of his painting techniques based on a closer examination of individual paintings. We will explore key influences amongst the friends around him such as Francis Bacon, the role of drawing and printmaking in his work as an artist and discover why he detested Renaissance art.
What will we cover?
• A chronological survey of Freud’s life and career
• The development of his style from small scale, immaculately painted portraits to monumental portraits, paint as flesh.
• We will consider Freud’s place within Modernism. Can his work even be labelled?
• Freud rarely talked about his work but his working life was documented in photographs taken by his studio assistant. We will explore this more private view of Freud’s studio life.
• We will consider what it would have been like to “sit” for Freud.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• You will be able to recognise at least three key paintings by Lucian Freud from both his earlier career and his later work.
• Have a good overview of Freud’s life.
• Know some of the other artists working within the same period and with whom his work may be linked stylistically.
• Have an understanding of how Freud’s painting style changes and why.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable for all levels.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught with lecture, slide presentations and group discussions. Handouts will be provided by your tutor to support your learning on the course; these handouts will be available online/digitally for download, not printed out for you.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You might wish to purchase a notebook for taking notes. You might wish to buy some of the books on any reading list provided.

Julie Barlow has a degree in Art History/History from the University of Hull and an MPhil (Fine Arts) from the University of Birmingham. She has worked in a variety of roles at Leighton House, V&A and Tate Gallery before studying for a PGCE and moving into Museum Education. Julie has over twenty years of experience as a freelance lecturer at the National Portrait Gallery working on all areas of the Education Programme and also for the first ten years at the National Gallery and in the last decade at the Wallace Collection.
