What is the course about?

This lively course will enable you to reinforce your French speaking and comprehension. You will acquire a level of language competency that enables you to communicate in most situations while your listening skills are constantly reinforced.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Conversations based on daily news, drawing on TV and radio programmes as well as newspaper articles. The topics may include education, the environment, transport, science and technology, art, politics, news in brief, etc. Suggestions and ideas will be discussed at the beginning of the term.

Grammar will only be covered on an ad-hoc basis.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- discuss current affairs more confidently
- express your opinion regarding cultural matters
- identify specific information from a radio/TV programme or from a film extract
- use grammar orally more accurately
- develop your understanding of French culture and society.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Ideal if you have completed French 4 or would like to build up your confidence before joining a French 5 course. If you are not sure about your level, please contact the languages department for advice on languages@citylit.ac.uk

It is also essential that you have knowledge of more complex grammar terminology (e.g. the subjunctive, the conditional, direct and indirect speech, pronouns).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The material will be provided by the tutor.

French 4/5: actualité et discussion in term 3 or French 4/5: pratique et perfectionnement: module 3. Ask your tutor for advice.

Sylviane Decrolière

After studying English in a French University, Sylviane decided to move to the UK and very soon, started to give French Private Tuitions. She then successfully attended Adult Teaching courses and attends many Trainings on a yearly basis. Sylviane managed a language department in a London adult education college and was invited to give weeks long trainings to primary uk teachers teaching Languages. She also gave support and advice in writing a book on learning Hindi. Sylviane has experience in teaching French to Students of different backgrounds and levels; this includes French grammar, culture including francophone culture, litterature and more specific subjects. Sylviane enjoys teaching and uses her creativity in her teaching. Being a life Coach specialised in Education, gives Sylviane the increased ability to adjust and help a diversity of Students. Sylviane speaks 5 languages and is currently learning Shikomori, a language related to Kiswahili. "Learning French helps you understand many different cultures and its people (Francophones countries). Learning a language is also best to nothing else to keep dementia away".
